Adriana Lima was born on June 12, 1981 in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. At a very young age Adriana competed in local pageants, and while still in high school, Adriana entered the Supermodel of Brazil competition presented by Ford Models. Adriana won the contest and moved on to Supermodels of the World competition, in which she was awarded second place. Adriana was quickly snapped up by Elite Model Management.
After signing with Elite, Adriana swiftly landed print, ad and runway work. Her first runway appearance was in 1997 for Anna Sui. She subsequently made appearances on the catwalk for Emanuel Ungaro and Balmain. In 1999, Adriana Lima landed a major contract with Victoria’s Secret for their annual fashion show and their summer catalogue. Adriana was shortly named a Victoria’s Secret Angel, boosting her career even further.
Soon after landing a contract with Victoria’s Secret, other companies and designers such as Guess?, Vera Wang and Ralph Lauren quickly took interest in Adriana too. In 2002 and 2003, Adriana Lima took to the runway for many major fashion houses, including Christian Dior, Versace, Louis Vuitton and Alexander McQueen. Adriana then landed a covetable cosmetics contract with Maybelline.
Throughout her modeling career, Adriana landed covers of Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. She also appeared in advertisements for Anna Sui Jeans, Armani Jeans, BCBG, Bebe, Emporio Armani, Giorgio Armani, Guess Jeans and XOXO. In 2008, Adriana also took on an acting role - playing herself in the popular televisions series Ugly Betty. She is currently one of the highest paid models and her career continues to go from strength to strength.
