Biography
Du Juan has established herself as one of the most successful Asian models in the industry. She was the first Asian model to grace the cover of French Vogue. She has taken the fashion world by storm since her debut at the Spring 2006 Paris Haute Couture where she walked for top designers- Chanel, Valentino, Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier and Anne Valerie Hash.
Born and raised in Shanghai, China, Du Juan started modeling by chance. Her childhood dream was to be a world-class dancer and she studied both dance and opera at the prestigious Shanghai Dance School. Unfortunately, Du Juan was told she was too tall to continue dancing, which lead her to try modeling. She took the top prize at a national modeling competition. Her graceful ballerina like manner translated beautifully behind the camera and Du Juan quickly made a name for herself in fashion.
Du Juan has worked with some of fashion’s most renowned photographers – Mario Testino, Peter Lindberg, Patrick Demarchelier, Mert and Marcus, David Sims, Paolo Roversi, Mario Sorrenti, Karl Lagerfeld, Juergen Teller, and Craig McDean, to name a few. She is also featured regularly in such influential magazines as Vogue (Italian, French, American, Chinese), W, PoP, and Allure. She is the most prominent face of China Vogue – with over five covers including the inaugural issue, and at least one editorial in each issue since its launch in September 2005.
In her first international show season, Du Juan walked down an astonishing total of 43 runways for top brands such as Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, Roberto Cavalli, Hermes, Kenzo, Bottega Veneta, Emmanuel Ungaro, Dries Van Noten, Oscar de la Renta, and Badgley Mischka. She remains a prominent feature on the runways of the world.
Du Juan’s success within the fashion industry was solidified later that year by appearing in global advertising campaigns for five major international brands – Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, Roberto Cavalli, the Gap, Swarovski, Shanghai Tang, the first Chinese global luxury brand and Lane Crawford, Asia’s premier luxury retail giant. She can currently be seen in the Fall Winter 2008 advertisements for Giorgio Armani and David Yurman.
Now based in New York City, Du Juan travels home to China when she has a break in her demanding schedule. She remains one of the most sought after faces in the industry
CareerA former Ford Supermodel of the World runner-up, Du made her runway debut in Spring 2006, walking for prominent designers such as Valentino (opening and closing his bridal show), Jean-Paul Gaultier, Shiatzy Chen, Roberto Cavalli and Chanel.
In 2005 Mario Testino photographed her for the cover of Vogue Paris with Australian model Gemma Ward becoming the first ever Asian cover-model. This lead to a flurry of advertising campaigns for Louis Vuitton, Roberto Cavalli, Gap, Swarovski, United Colors of Benetton, and Yves St. Laurent. With multiple bookings being a rare accomplishment, particularly for a new face, Style.com the online home of Vogue and W magazine, declared her one of the top ten models to watch for the Fall 2006 season.[10] She graced the cover of the premier issue of Vogue China and has since become a fixture in its pages,[11] appearing in almost one editorial per issue since its launch in 2005.[12] She has also appeared on the cover of the 2006 TIME with fellow model Coco Rocha, and is one of the models featured in the 2008 Pirelli Calendar, which was shot in her native Shanghai.
She peaked at number 14 on model ranking site MODELS.com: In recent seasons Du has been featured in advertisement campaigns for Giorgio Armani, Esprit, Anna Sui, Uniqlo, David Yurman and Yue Sai, a Chinese expansion of L'oreal.
Du has appeared in editorials for Allure, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, V magazine, i-D and the Italian, American, Chinese, French, Taiwanese, Korean and British editions of Vogue.[13]
In 2010 she appeared in a music video for Cantopop singer Jacky Cheung's "Double Trouble" as Cheung's love interest.[14]
Largely absent from Europe in recent seasons, Du spends her time between New York and China
Her favorite fashion designer is Alber Elbaz of Lanvin.[15]
In 2009, Du Juan released a two-piece cosmetic line inspired by a shoot with photographer Camilla Akrans which included 24 Carat Gold body sparkle.[16] In the same year, Chinese model agency New Silk Road sued Du Juan for $659,000 USD for an alleged breach of contract;[17] The outcome is yet to be known.
Her friends include Gemma Ward, Sasha Pivovarova, Mackenzie Hamilton, Ai Tominaga [18] and Han Jin as well as Chinese models Emma Pei, Liu Wen, and Shu Pei
